10 Ways Recruiters Can Use SlideShare for Branding Ever heard of SlideShare? Its a site that hosts your slide decks from Powerpoint or Keynote. Its one of those great content marketing platforms most people have never heard of, let alone recruiters. Some impressive stats first of all: SlideShare is one of the top 150 sites on the web, they get 60 million visitors per month and have 3 billion slide views a month (thats 1,140 slides viewed per second). So the traffic is good but its also the right type of traffic for most content marketers its highly professional. According to ComScore, SlideShare has five times more traffic from business owners than other popular websites like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. And the most impressive of all: LinkedIn just acquired SlideShare for the princely sum of $119 million. This of course bodes very well for further integration of the two products. I wont delve further into why its a useful tool, instead Id like to give you ten ways to use it successfully: 1. Use existing content Chances are that you will have a number of Powerpoint presentations kicking about on your hard drive. What company doesnt have a sales presentation? Your recruitment process outlined? A few slides about your technology practice? As long as they dont contain any confidential information, go ahead and upload these to SlideShare and you immediately have content. You can of course change them before you upload, you might want to change images, update figures or cut out a few slides in the deck. 2. Keep it simple When I upload a presentation to SlideShare, Ill typically take out about half the slides. I leave the visually interesting and self-explanatory ones, as the viewer wont hear me talk about the content. Nobody wants to sit through a 70-slide deck in an auditorium and nobody wants to see even half than that online so keep it simple instead and get your message across in a brief manner. Some of the best presentations Ive seen are only about 10 slides long and contain very few words. 3. Be sure to add clickable links I only realised that you can add hyperlinks to a SlideShare deck a few months ago. This means that you can add a link to your website or Twitter on the front page and last page, in case anyone loves your presentation you want to make it easy for them to contact you of course. When I put slides up about LinkedIn for instance, I of course link that to our LinkedIn training workshops in London. 4. Use the right keywords for  SEO SlideShare has an internal search engine where visitors pull searches every day, most of these will be researchers out on a fact-finding mission. On top of that the content also ranks really well in external search engines like Google and Bing, use this to your advantage. Just like a YouTube video, its important to use the right title, description and tags in order for it to be found online. Instead of calling your presentation Annual Salary Survey, try London Technology Salary Facts and Figures by Profession and Seniority the latter one is full of keywords that people will use to searches. 5. Embed here and there A great feature with SlideShare is the fact that you can embed your presentations on websites, blog posts or anywhere else you can think of. This mean anyone can host your presentation on their blog but with a link back to your SlideShare account. This can work really well when writing a blog post about a topic, you add more weight to your argument with a presentation embedded. In fact, I write a quick blog post around every most public presentations I give, an example is How To Build Your Personal Brand on Social Media [Slides]. 6. Link up to LinkedIn LinkedIn offers its users very few cool applications but thankfully the SlideShare integration is one of them. By adding the SlideShare app on LinkedIn, you can automatically display your most recent presentation on your LinkedIn profile. Or you can set it to whichever presentation you feel represents you the best, you can even show two decks on your profile. Everytime you upload a new presentation to SlideShare, it updates your profile and it sends out a notification to your networks homefeed indicating theres new content to have a look at on your profile. 7. SlideShare surprise My party trick when speaking at a conference is to upload my deck to SlideShare early in the morning. I then schedule a tweet linking to the presentation to go out when I should be up on the podium speaking (using the event hashtag of course). When I do speak I mention something like right about now a tweet is going out linking to this presentation by the way. This has generated thousands of views of my presentations from all around the world. 8. Check the stats of your presentations By having a look at how many views, comments and shares your presentations get youll get an idea for what people out there are interested in. And perhaps what they arent interested in. Just like with any content marketing strategy, its about monitoring what works and try to do more of just that. Youll get even more interesting stats if you upgrade 9. Go pro if you want leads OK if you are really serious about your presentations and feel that they will lead to solid business, you can upgrade your account. This will then give you analytics of whos viewing your decks and SlideShare will present you with up to 30 leads per month. You can get your own branding on your account and you can do private uploads as well. My rule of thumb is as with all freemium models, only go pro when youve mastered the basics. 10. Check out other peoples decks for inspiration Finally, youll probably get into the whole presentation thing now after realising what SlideShare can do for you. How NOT to Ruin Your Career at Work Parties Tis the  season to not get too folly. Everyone loves a good summer party. Not only does it break up the lengthy wait between Christmases, but its also  an opportunity to let your hair down with the people who  youve toughed out  the first half of the year with. Apart from your colleagues, there is usually one guest who never fails on attendance, and they go by the name of Inappropriate Behaviour. In most cases, great food, drink and sunshine is a great recipe for  celebrating  the company you work for. However, its a combination that  can also be a  catalyst for extremely cringeworthy behaviours. Unless you are planning to flee the country the day after your summer do, its best you save face and hold onto your dignity. How can you do this? Simply.  Avoid these  extremely embarrassing acts: 1. Avoid friendly confrontation After having broken free  from the confines of the office walls and all the rules that come with being there, you might feel inclined to be up front about  some workplace  frustrations and annoyances. You might think its a good chance to passively address ongoing issues that have been brewing in the background, but it really isnt. Its an unprofessional behaviour that will only add fuel to fires. Youll probably end up saying things you really should have kept quiet about, or gone to HR with first. The big no-no here is having it out with your boss, and trying to make light of the situation. 2. Dont spill your  secrets The thing with secrets, is that once youve spilled the beans, the beans cannot be unspilled. Opening up has its place: it can sometimes be a really good thing, and encourage a sense of cohesion and trust among you and your work mates. However there is definitely a line, and crossing it will likely leave you feeling  exposed and regretful. You dont want to be the butt of jokes at your company, or open yourself up for scrutiny by revealing too much about your personal life. 3. Keep your clothes on When the weathers warm and the good vibes are flowing, you might feel inclined to strip off and let the warm air caress your skin. NO. Just, no. Even if there is a pool at your disposal, make a promise with yourself that its bathers or nothing. Not only will getting semi-naked make you look unprofessional, it will also come back to haunt you  again and again, thanks to smart phones with cameras. 4.  Stay awake Youre  tired,  perhaps a little bit tipsy and maybe even a bit sun stroke. Still, sleeping in public places is not an acceptable behaviour.  If you feel yourself nodding off, take yourself home.  Falling asleep looks really bad, and again, the photos will haunt you forever.  And then there are the safety issues involved 5. Dont become overly affectionate We work with our colleagues every day; you share a special bond that should generally be kept as a verbal, professional one. Watch your wandering hands; the summer party can often create what seems like the perfect opportunity to become affectionate and tell our colleagues just how much they mean to us. Remember to keep things professional.  In the instance that you have an office crush attending the party too, its best to lay out some ground rules for yourself beforehand, and stick to them. Without some serious self control you could end up putting on a show for your company that you maybe wouldnt usually want them having tickets to 6.  Get out of the gossip circles Interesting stories often come out at summer parties. Only a couple of hours in, youll probably find yourself learning A LOT of new information about the people you work closely with day to day. Whatever you do, dont get roped in to nasty gossiping. This sort of behaviour can make some employees feel left out and insecure, and really encourages a negative culture. Try to remain as positive as possible youll feel so much better having been a friendly patron, and you wont have that sinking feeling the next day, trying to remember all the hurtful things you said in jest. T o assign a dollar value to your work, consider the following factors: How much money are you directly responsible for generating for your company? How much money does your work save your company? What are competing companies paying employees in your role? Are you more efficient or do you have a larger workload than your predecessors? Do you increase the efficiency/happiness/good energy of others in the workplace? Do you own any lucrative relationships that you leverage for the company? Are you contributing to positive public relations for the company through social media? All of these factors should be considered when evaluating your worth. If your compensation is only 2% of your sales, you’re undervalued. If your contributions in human resources have caused the company to see a two year decrease in legal fees of two million dollars each year (and likely prevented PR nightmares), but you are paid $40,000 per year, you are not receiving adequate compensation. How To Raise The Value of Your Personal Brand Start tracking the amount of money you are responsible for generating/tracking/saving. Knowing how much money you are making/saving your company provides you with valuable justifications for a raise or a higher salary with a new firm. Try to be as concrete as possible when recording your numbers. Pay special attention to any revenue jumps or expense decreases that your directly impacted. Publicize your wins. Humility will not help you increase your value. Make sure that your team and boss are aware of your contributions. Give proper recognition to everyone responsible for great work, but ensure that your contributions are not buried. Be gracious, but accentuate your strengths. Become an expert. If appropriate, create an online social media presence that displays your industry knowledge and passion. Connect with other industry thought leaders and current and potential customers. Having a strong industry-based social media following can have a positive impact on your ability to be hired, depending on your industry, and being seen as a company ambassador, if your company’s social media policy allows you to list your workplace.

Are You a Square Peg Define Your Unique Career Hole - Career Pivot Define Your Unique Career Hole What does your unique “career hole” look like? This is a follow-up from my post, Are You a Square Peg Trying to Fill a Round Hole? When I re-posted this to LinkedIn Publisher last week, I got so many interesting responses. The two most common responses were: I am not a square but a triangle, hexagon, star, etc. What do I do about being a square peg? Let me show you the process through which I take square pegs to find their unique career hole. Define Your Unique Career Hole Another way to put this is: know thyself. You cannot target your ideal working environment unless you know what it is. You cannot find your unique career hole if you cannot define it. Can you clearly articulate what your ideal work environment looks like? For 99% of you, the answer is a resounding NO. Reflect upon when you have been happy in 7 different areas during your career: Boss â€" When did you have a boss that you really liked? What made that person a good boss for you? Team â€" When did you have a really great team? What was the make-up of that team? Rewards â€" When did you feel valued at work? What made you feel valued? Structure â€" How much structure do you need at work, and who should create that structure? Variety â€" How much variety do you need within your day? Emotions â€" Do you need a supportive, emotional environment at work? Activity â€" How much activity do you need during your day? You can download my career reflection worksheet to help with this. Once you have clearly defined when things were really good in the past, go back to times when things were really bad. I use the Birkman Assessment with all of my clients to pick out situations that highlight what causes them to go into stress. Once we have identified those situations, we can determine how to avoid them. Listen to the most recent episode Now, we can clearly identify the shape of your unique career hole. We can start the search! Locating Your Unique Hole The first step to locating your unique career hole is to define a set of open-ended questions. This list of questions will evolve over time. They might be as simple as: Will you tell me about your management style? How much freedom will I have in determining schedules? What does a typical workday look like at your company? How do you make your employees feel valued? Develop a set of questions for each of the 7 areas above. The next step is to target companies within your industry or profession that can hire you. You will dutifully use your questions to determine which companies have aunique career holethat matches your requirements. This is not easy! It takes a great deal of tenacity and patience. For some of my square pegs, it means going to work for themselves. For others, it means working for smaller organizations that are willing to create unique career holes for them. Congratulations to Animal #timsackettday -

Congratulations to Animal #timsackettday - Today is a special day. My friend Laurie Ruettimann started it a few years ago to honor someone whos made a difference in the HR and recruiting industries.  Laurie notes theyve honored good folks like Tim Sackett, Paul Hebert and Kelly Dingee. This year, the honoree is the Recruiting Animal.  When I heard the news, I jumped in to  participate! If you dont know about Animal, you should! He runs the greatest recruiting show on earth, and hes been doing it forever. Hes been podcasting since way before podcasting was the thing to do. When I first came on the social media scene, he was always very welcoming and supportive, and even invited me on his show. He was one of my early friends on Twitter, and one of the people who made using Twitter worthwhile for me. My earliest memories of Animal include emails where he invited me to argue with him publicly online.  He also gave me information about  his  research about LinkedIn for my first book. On the outside, hes a little.shall we sayabrasive, but hes always there with an offer to help. In fact, Animal recently started his good recruiter list. He says, There arerecruitersworking in the trenches who are good at what they do and could offer lots of good advice but  they never turn up on these lists because they dont work at creating a public profile.  This Good Recruiter List is going to make them visible too. See, Animal is always lending a hand. Id share other nice exchanges Ive had over the years, but Im afraid Animal might yell at me for sounding too sentimental or mushy. But, its safe to say hes one of the good guys. Even though he may yell at you. He only yells because he cares.
